A shaman drum is considered one of the most powerful tools in traditional and modern energy healing practices. Its use goes far beyond music, it’s often described as a “bridge” between the physical and spiritual worlds.
A shaman drum is typically a hand-held frame drum made from animal hide stretched over a wooden frame. In many traditions, it’s referred to as the “heartbeat of Mother Earth” because of its deep, rhythmic sound. The repetitive rhythm of the drum (usually around 4–7 beats per second) helps shift the brain into a theta brainwave state, which allows practitioners to enter a trance-like state, used for spiritual journeying, guidance, and insight. The vibrations from the drum are believed to help restore natural energy flow in the body and cleanse negative emotional states. Drumming can help release suppressed emotions, reduce stress, and create a safe space for emotional processing.
The drum also represents connection to Earth, animals, and ancestors, and is seen as a spirit ally or guide used in healing, protection, and guidance ceremonies. A Nepali Shaman, often referred to as a 'Jhankri', uses the shaman drum for spiritual practices and healing ceremonies.
