Essential Oils Use on or Around Pets

Although essential oils are a healthy alternative for people, not all essential oils can be used on all pets.

Essential oils are occasionally used on dogs, horses and other farm animals.  They are usually used for spot application and hoof/paw care but can be used in inhalation therapy.  With  the correct precautions, essential oils can be safely used.  I have been using essential oils on and around my dogs for years with no issues.

In general, do not use any essential oils topically in cats.  There are many  essential oils that cannot be used around them even by diffusion because they metabolic systems cannot break down many of the substances in the essential oils. This exposure can result in liver or kidney damage.  Similar caution must be taken with fish, reptiles, birds, and rodents.

Before use on or around animals, make sure to confirm the safety of each essential oil.

If you notice your pet acting strange when essential oils are in use, stop using those oils immediately and seek proper veterinarian treatment.
